Wu takes an observational, matter of fact stance to these different lives and this overall enterprise, reminiscent of how Kyoko Miyake took us through the looking glass of Japan’s idol culture in “Tokyo Idols,” another doc on a similar sociological beat that would make for a great double feature or essay.

Michael Atkinson 02 Nov 2018

It's the massive number of fans, coupled with the obvious catastrophic loneliness and blind devotionalism, that makes Wu's film so haunting.

Norman Wilner 26 Apr 2018

Its real focus: the desire to be seen, and how that desire can be monetized (and even weaponized) by companies out to make a buck at any cost.

Sarah Foulkes 19 Jul 2018

The film is certainly ambitious in its scope as it tries to piece together the sometimes odious world of live-streaming.

Jennie Kermode 17 Jul 2018

Hao Wu's documentary... contrasts the hyper-real imagery of the YY screen, with all its glitter and cute icons and simulated cheers, with the stark vistas of the apartment buildings where these purveyors of glamour actually reside.
