People Who Do Noise (2008)

'People Who Do Noise' is a film about the experimental music of Portland, Oregon. Extensive interviews and intimate performance footage provide an intense portrait of the motivations, emotions, and methods that go into this uncompromising, sometimes brutal musical form. Unwavering in its focus, the film brings to light an art form unfathomable to many, with only the words of the musicians themselves providing any explanation for the pulsating sonic chaos they create. The unflinching cinematic style defies any trend-setting or commercial representation, opting instead for a stark portrayal of a musical underground at its most genuine and vital.

An insightful and entertaining look into noise and the people who do it. The documantary delves into the psyche of the artists and brings to light some enlightening responses as to why they're so drawn into creating what many consider as one of the most extreme and challenging artforms on the planet. Well worth seeing for anyone interested in exploring the outer fringes of art and music.

Oscillating Innards, Kitty Midwife, Yellow Swans, Josh Hydeman are the highlights of this disc. Sadly, their performances seemed to also be the shortest by far. Other than that, be prepared to see a very small segment of a niche in Portland. I am sorry, but when Yellow Swans said "no one has their eye on Portland as a cool place" (paraphrased) I wanted to die. Maybe because I make noise in South Carolina, I am acutely aware of perceptions of Portland, but seriously? I hear people talk about how much they love Portland all the time. If you want to watch a documentary about noise that actually covers a large range of groups and textures, check out the "Fun From None: Live From The No Fun Fest 2004/2005" DVD on Load Records. If you want to watch Portlanders talk about how awesome Portland is, watch this.

it makes you question music the way it is.
