Its remarkable that a film about a recently crippled woman, who returns to her Louisiana hometown, and is subsequently cared for by a black woman who was a former drug addict never even comes close to being cheesy or feel like a one of those stupid lifetime movies. I owe that to John Sayles who allows the characters to drive the story. Mary McDonnell is one of the most underrated actresses alive and she gives a brilliant performance as the former Soap star who now must cope with life as a paraplegic. Alfre Woodard, who is ironically known for doing a lot of Hallmark movies, is surprisingly restrained as the nurse. The film hardly ever enters cliche' territory. What I really loved was at the end, both characters have grown considerably, but neither one has any real clue about the future.

This movie shows that Mary McDonnell is one of the top 3 greatest American Actresses of this generation.... oh yeah, and the movie is good, too.

I really digged the style. How more things were left unsaid than said. Nice athmoshpere. Peaceful tempo. I loved Alfre Woodard's rolework. The playscript and dialogues were very good too, though some of the side chacraters didn't work, it would have been better to just leave them out, like May Alice's two high-school-time bullies who came by. I'm not sure what was the "main theme" of the movie, it had something to say on various subjects, but it's okay, I really enjoyed it.

Great emotional, character-driven drama. Interesting, original plot. Well directed - characters are developed well, and the movie does not drift for a moment. Good performances from Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard, David Strathairn and Vondie Curtis-Hall.

I love the plot. I've worked in rehab, and this touched me profoundly.
