Partisan (2015)

On the edge of a crumbling city, 11-year-old Alexander lives in a sequestered commune alongside other children, their mothers, and charismatic leader, Gregori. Gregori teaches the children how to raise livestock, grow vegetables, work as a community - and how to kill. With the birth of a new baby brother weighing on his mind, Alexander begins to question Gregori's overpowering influence on the children and their training to become assassins. Threatened by his increasing unwillingness to fall in line, Gregori's behavior turns erratic and adversarial toward the child he once considered a son. With the two set dangerously at odds and the commune's way of life disintegrating, the residents fear a violent resolution is at hand.

The story drags a little in the middle stages but this is still a strong, unsettling Australian feature.

Tom Huddleston 06 Jan 2016

A film trying so hard to upend expectations that it loses itself in the process.

John Ferguson 07 Jan 2016

Cassel's subtle and quietly menacing performance helps compensate for a story that drifts along rather aimlessly at times, while Kleiman's dreamy visuals mark him out as a talent to watch.

Vincent Mancini 05 Feb 2015

An intriguing, carefully crafted film with an obnoxious tendency to meditate when you wish it would elaborate. It feels like an objectively "good film" that wouldn't be anyone's favorite.

Interesting and reasonably well crafted dystopian allegory. The stark visual stylings unfortunately clash with the story being told, never creating a truly credible world for the characters to inhabit. As debuts go, it suggests not an exciting new voice, but an eloquent one struggling for something to actually say.
