Paradise: Love, the first in a thematic trilogy, is a sad story about the difficulty individuals face when trying to establish relationships across vast cultural and economic gulfs.

I'm in shock that Austria has such a dark corner in their film industry. This is the first Ulrich Seidl film I've seen and I will try to watch more. This is a grimly realistic story and the acting is so good that you could almost imagine it was a fly on the wall documentary. The story is an insight into a world I never knew existed but probably does. It's a very unconfortable watch from start to finish but is excellently directed.

The striking compositions mingle childlike curiosity with adult decadence -- and natural beauty with garish consumer culture -- to provocative, even profound effect.

Thematically, this chronicle of sex trade tourism is similar to Laurent Cantet's Heading South, but stylistically it's different--rigorously conceived and visually impressive.

The film is, perhaps, intended as a deadpan burlesque of race and class and beauty ideals...but it plays more as a boorish, overextended punch line.
