Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist (2014)

In 1998 Marco Pantani, the most flamboyant and popular cyclist of his era, won both the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, a titanic feat of physical and mental endurance that no rider has repeated since. He was a hero to millions, the saviour of cycling following the doping scandals which threatened to destroy the sport. However, less than six years later, aged just 34, he died alone, in a cheap hotel room, from acute cocaine poisoning. He had been an addict for five years. This is the story of the tragic battles fought by the most important Italian cyclist of his generation; man verses mountain, athlete verses addiction, Marco Pantani verses himself.

7/18/15 Netflix An absorbing doc about a super human bike racer that proved all too human. His fall from grace was more dramatic and disastrous than Lance Armstrong's, probably because of the popularity of bike racing in Europe. The film maker gives a sympathetic and fair assessment of Pantanis life, one started out so wonderfully and ended so tragically.

It makes for a great story but Pantani remains an elusive figure and the film is annoyingly inconclusive and evasive - more determined to cheer his achievements than explore the bigger picture of his rise and fall.

One of the best sport documentary films I have seen. Up there with Senna & TT Closer to the Edge. With limited interest in cycling and no knowledge of this guy or 'his story' found this absolutely captivating. Have no bought the DVD! A must watch.
