Overlord feels like a small but vivid tragedy inside an epic container.

Narratively, Cooper manages to give a moving, elegiac quality to this soldier's chronicle of a death foretold; and aesthetically... he brings out the strange, emotive beauty contained in these images of an economy of death.

Almost exactly the sort of docudrama one could imagine being made by Humphrey Jennings or the Crown Film Unit back in the 1940s. If the archive footage proves more powerful and moving than the fictional narrative, the whole remains an authentic and detailed experience.

The original trailer calls this film "haunting and hypnotic". No two words could more aptly describe this surrealistic and original piece. The thing that really impresses me about this film is how subtle the anti-war message is. Most films (whether pro- or anti-war) are somewhat in-yer-face with whatever agenda they are pushing. Overlord is much more subdued, not only with it's message but with most of the performances, as well; this is especially true in the scene where the protaganist meets The Girl (my favorite scene). Also, it was quite refreshing to see a D-Day film from the exclusive view of the British. Some of the archive footage seems completely random and out of place, but considering this film was produced by the Imperial War Museum, I suppose it was to be expected.

An ingenious idea to combine real wartime footage from England's WWII archives, blending the footage seamlessly with a narrative story about a soldier's journey toward D-Day, "Overlord" stands above other war movies in the perspective of reality. The surreal moments of solider Tom envisioning his death in the battlefield over and over again is one of the highlights of the movie as well, mixing again reality with the dream. Ones looking for a big battle epic war movie will get nothing out of this movie, but something far more haunting.
