The best gay-themed films I've yet seen this year.

Watched this film last night and really enjoyed it up until the end. It's a very realistic portrayel of life in Israel/Palestine, with a very romantic love story. I didn't enjoy the ending. I'll explain why (spoilers!). Roy didn't need to pretend to be Nimer so the cops would chase him, they were on his tail as "Roy" anyway. And he didn't need to tell the head of the secret service that he'd send Nimer on a boat to France (thereby incriminating himself). It wasn't realistic. I felt that the tragic ending could have been avoided, but independent film makers rarely want a happy ending. However, I'm giving it four stars because it's a very well made film.

This movie is both a superb romance and an excellent political thriller. It's about two believable, flesh and blood gay men whose love is confined by the insane conventions of the age-old Palestinian-Israeli crisis. The acting is outstanding from both leads. You believe in their love and the restrictions of their lives. The directing and writing is top-notch. The film's pacing is perfect. Don't miss this one. For me, it's one of the brst movies of any genre in years.

While I understand the historic struggle of gay men, I can only feel a hollow emptiness at the ending of this film. Gay cinema is permeated with a seemingly unquenchable need for the tragic and the violent. Our realities are so much more than pain and struggle, which this film does little to represent. Regardless, it's a good film.

'Dark' puts the spotlight on a new kind of Romeo & Romeo story in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and should be commended for portraying the struggles of the expatriate men trapped in this geopolitical rift. However, the film simply lacks the depth and focus needed for a memorable romantic drama. Nicholas Jacob's shortcomings as an actor are also painfully apparent when put against the more subtly expressive Michael Aloni, and their on-screen chemistry suffers as a result. The film's attempt at a political thriller subplot is also rather banal, but the movie still amounts to a capable exploration of caution-to-the-wind romantic optimism.
