Orca (1977)

After witnessing the killing of his mate and offspring at the hands of a reckless Irish captain, a vengeful killer whale rampages through the fisherman's Newfoundland harbor. This movie taught me that whales were people too.

It is many years since I had seen this film so I purchased it a month or so ago and rewatched it. This film is one of the few mainstream Hollywood films I have seen which tried to really engage with the intelligence of these amazing creatures. The killing of this whale's mate is seen much as we would interpret the death of a human being. And on a certain level, why not. These creatures display high intelligence and strong emotional attachments that are very close to human relationships. Yes, this film does spend a lot of time on tugging the heart strings. Yes, this film does depend on references to Jaws and Moby Dick. Nevertheless overall, it is an intelligent and powerful portrayal of an ongoing issue. And this is a matter of life and death for humans as well. If we don't come to terms with our relationship with our fellow inhabitants on this planet, it is likely to be the death of us.

How devastating . . . .think about it: Orca's pregnant wife is harpooned; captured. Then gives birth to a fetus while on the whaling-ship's deck. Both Orca's wife and Orca's fatally injured child are thrown overboard. Orca's wife, barely alive, now commits suicide by ramming herself into the whaling-ship's roaring-propellers. ALL DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ORCA HIMSELF! Its sickening and heartbreaking. KING KONG (1976) meets JAWS! I love it and cry every time I see it, even though it gets only a 15 Percent, ORCA is still a tremendously great film (seen through the eyes of a 7-year old) Ennio Morricone's score and Carol Conners' vocals complete the picture's resonant impact upon me.

Orca is no Jaws, but it supplies some chills and a decent storyline. It's a lot better than the usual '70s Jaws ripoffs. 56/100

This movie is so cool! I liked the part when orca rescues a man from a great white shark thus killing the great white shark.
