If larger truths have been overlooked, the subject is still wrenching enough to make Oranges and Sunshine an inspired work of dignity and purpose.

A gut-wrenching tale, based on a true story, of the campaign by Margaret Humphreys, a British social worker, to understand how and why thousands of children were torn from their families and sent to Australia and other colonies, to live in horrible conditions. Emily Watson is a tour de force as the woman who would not relent until she had some answers for these lost souls who came to her for help in trying to find who they are. An excellent supporting cast, a tight script and a compelling story come together to make this an emotional journey and a recommended film.

Living in Perth (where much of the film is set though not actually filmed) and originating from the UK probably brought added relevance for me but it was an interesting film that never got bogged down in melodrama (surprising given Loach's soap opera pedigree) and made me want to find out more about Margaret Humphreys and the Child Migrants Trust and the legacy of British Home Children policy. The epilogue to the film does make it somewhat ambiguous regarding the number of children resettled to Australia (as depicted in the film) and other Commonwealth destinations and the time span over which this occurred. Still, this does not detract from an otherwise engaging and thought-provoking film.

Loach has made a film uncluttered by an obvious director's stamp, peopled by sympathetic characters and driven by a desire to say something about the world without losing sight of human experience.
