What a story. If it wasn't true, you wouldn't believe it. Not to be watched whilst wearing mascara.

Very powerful film although a bit televisual. Editing could have been a bit tighter but an amazing story and Emily Watson is phenomenal as usual.

The story is moving and more than worth-telling-- about how some 120-130,000 kids from the UK were sent to work in Australia ,even when they were not orphans, and left deprived of love when not blatantly abused. The way it is filmed is less great, being extremely conventional. Emily Watson does a great job as Margaret Humphreys, the social worker who uncovered it all.

In a practice that continued into the late Seventies, children in care were shipped from the UK in their thousands to Commonwealth destinations such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa because it was cheaper to pay for their 'upbringing' abroad. Many were erroneously told they were orphans and had their birth certificates doctored to cover the tracks of those responsible for this inhuman penny-pinching. Emily Watson (whose mother died suddenly during filming) delivers a powerhouse performance in portraying social worker turned investigator Margaret Humphreys. Moving and inspirational.
