Oranges and Sunshine (2010)

The story of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham, who uncovers one of the most significant social scandals in recent times – the forced migration of children from the United Kingdom to Australia and other Commonwealth countries. Moving, subtle evocation of a want for familial connection. Given the many instances of governmental abuses of the individual in recent history it can be hard to be surprised/outraged by that aspect of this story. What will move you , though, are the simple, direct performances by all concerned. Time and again they serve to really move you. Its 1980's setting is depicted perfectly, smoke filled pubs, people useing phone boxes etc. Proving the potency of cheap music , Cat Stevens' Wild World is used to near perfect effect.

Set against true life events, with Emily watson playing Margaret humphreys a social worker in 80s nottingham uncovering a event in the 40s connecting two goverments. the u.k and australia. thouisands of orphans, or as we find out that fact was medled with, shipped off to Australia and here showing a particular place where in most cases terrible events took place, and here the story involving many of the now grown up kids tryinmg to reconnect with parents and Margaret at vcentre of it all. this is well made, directed by Jim loach. it certainly showcased events i knew nothing about, and wether everything is acurate, i dont know, but its out there now and all the good for that.

How often have we seen well-intentioned movies become sanctimonious and lose their dramatic edge? No such accusations can be leveled at Jim Loach's Oranges and Sunshine, an impressive film that...

A harrowing and emotional film which avoids the obvious heartstring cliches of a film like this, but one that, sadly, fails to ultimately engage enough to deliver the pay out the audience wants.
