An uncompromising and brutal in its grim realism, a shocking drama dealing with Rome's occupation by the German forces. One of the best Italian movies of the post WW2 period that I've seen.

A dark, beautiful and haunting film about the Italian resistance in WWII - toying with such motifs as religion, loyalty, love and patriotism, it manages to do all that and more... and not even hitting the sappy, corny note. Really great.

This one had an impact on the world, Italian cinema, and anyone who watched it from the time of it's release until today. It's a gritty, authentic, and heartbreaking experience.

A brilliant tale of defiance told through an intimate setting and group of characters.
