It may seem churlish to praise a film one admires not so much for what it gets right as for what it manages to avoid getting wrong. But Oh! What a Lovely War is perhaps a special case.

Wickedly black satire of WWI and how it was waged - although its main target seems to be the English class system, which was shattered by the Great War, making satire somewhat redundant. Its deeply symbolist depiction of the concepts of war in general carry far more meaning than later attempts to depict its horrors literally with simulated bloodshed (cf. Saving Private Ryan).

This film is amazing and heartwrenching. I'd never have thought a musical could be that emotional.

WWI satire is as old as the war itself (or nearly), and this one works unusually well (*coughSiegfriedSassooncough*). It gets less Obvious as the movie progresses, which helps. The highlight for me was Maggie Smith's music hall performance.
