Director Jafar Panahi walks the line between fact and fiction with such skill that it is difficult to tell where fact ends and fiction begins. With Offside, he has made a film that is both a disparaging critique of the ban that prevents Iranian women from attending men's sporting events and therefore participating actively in national pride and a celebration of the women who dare to attend anyways. With parts of the film shot during an actual World Cup qualifying match, Offside feels like a documentary, even as the action that unfolds has to have been staged. You feel every moment with the women who have been caught sneaking into the game as they desperately try to catch glimpses of the match. It is amazing to watch their pride for their country, and their determination to show their nationalism, even as their country tries to prevent their participation.

It's clever and funny (and, at its core, pretty sad)--a lot of Iranian films actually do have a lot of heart. The acting is natural--not amazing, but it didn't strike me as grating as a lot of others have said. It's interesting to watch the obvious national pride the girls feel towards Iran while protesting its social problems. It's a cute little film that sparked something of a movement among women to be allowed to attend games (Ahmadinejad even voted for it, but was curtailed by the Ayatollah).

I went to this film out of curiousity, having never seen an Iranian film previously. It was a good story about a group consisting of several woman, who had been caught trying to pass themselves off as males, in order to gain access to a championship soccer game. It's well done, and gives the viewer a look at everyday life in a country most Americans know very little about. I want to see some of Panahi's other films.
