Strikingly ambitious, even when it can be as formal as a church service.

Leo is one of America's great character actors, but her mother superior is written as a fairly one-dimensional villain.

Guy Lodge 25 Oct 2017

A piercing, immersive, and superbly played convent drama in which the suppression of speech is witnessed at both an individual and institutional level.

Holy moly, Melissa Leo makes a scary Mother Superior.

Wendy Ide 25 Oct 2017

Driven by strong performances, this is, however, a more conventional piece than other recent pictures which explored crises of faith.
