** (out of four) Carole Lombarde is a woman who believes she is dying. March is a New York City reporter who brings her to New York where she becomes the brave toast of the town. Too uncomfortable to be funny at times and wildly uneven. For now I am leaving my review at 2 stars, however, I was just noticing that the running time is listed at 1 hr and 40 minutes. The rented version I watched ran only 75 minutes. The cut out segments may have filled in some of the gaping holes that I feel are missing. My review could change.

The plot is great satire of the media/audience relationship, but it runs out of steam. The racial stereotypes are difficult to watch. Good pacing and camera work but I always prefer the black and white for these films. Definitely worth watching, but I think it's a bit overrated.

Hecht handles the material breezily and pungently, poking fun in typical manner of half-scorn at the newspaper publisher, his reporter, doctors, the newspaper business, phonies, suckers, and whatnot.

I know this is supposed to be a classic, but I found it kind of tedious. I'm not s huge Lombard or March fan, so that probably didn't help. I'll take Ben Hecht's Front Page/His Girl Friday any day.
