Nostalgia (1983)

Russian poet Andrei Gorchakov journeys through Italy with his interpreter Eugenia to research the life of an 18th-century Russian composer who once lived abroad. Isolated and consumed by an unrelenting longing for his homeland, Andrei becomes drawn to Domenico, a radical mystic obsessed with spiritual redemption. Through austere imagery and extended temporal rhythms, Tarkovsky examines exile, memory, and the profound melancholy of being unable to belong fully to either place or language.

As is expected of Tarkovsky he raises questions in this movie that don't have to be answered, it is a spiritual journey that has to be taken along with the writer (Yankovskiy) in an attempt to find the needed answers. It is probably Tarkovsky's most enigmatic and perplexing work, clearly made under the heavy influence of homesickness as Tarkovsky worked and lived in Italy at the time. As usual with Tarkovksy the film's visual poetry is stunning, long uninterrupted shots and pictorial musings lead you in the state of trance. Also the fear of a nuclear war that permeated the world at the time can be traced through the character played by Erland Josephson who believes that the world is coming to an end. He would play a similar character in Tarkovsky's next and last film 'The Sacrifice'.

Tarkovsky was known as a poet, not a storyteller, and over the course of two hours, he really tests your patience. What little plot remains in the film moves at an excruciating pace, but for better or for worse, it fits the overall aesthetic. This trance-like meditation centers around a musicologist who experiences nostalgia like a form of mental disintegration, and the slow, deliberate camera movements, misty landscapes and repetitiveness only add to the picture's hallucinatory tone. The most striking visuals come in the evocative black & white sequences, most likely a combination of flashbacks and Gortchakov's interior fantasies. Difficult and obtuse, it's a tough film to recommend, but there aren't many like it.

Nostalghia is one of my most favorite movies. I have seen it many many times, sometimes fully, sometimes partially, and still I watch it sometimes, as it is not just a movie for me. It is the manifest of a lonely man in this crazy, so called modernized, civilized, progressing world. In fact I adore tarkovski not only as a cinematographer, but also as a prophet of modern world.
