Akerman films her mother Natalia, an elderly woman of Polish origin, in her Brussels apartment. For two hours, we will see them eating, chatting and sharing memories, sometimes accompanied by Sylvaine, Chantal's sister. Also, and to show how small the world has become, Chantal remains in contact with her mother at other times of the year via Skype from lands as far away from Belgium as Oklahoma or New York.

The ingredients look so simple and raw as to be trash, but the film made from them is a piercing, precious, and sad depiction of the human craving for family and contact.

The rest of the film consists mostly of Akerman talking with her mother, blithely and lovingly, about everyday ephemera and about the past (Natalia was a survivor of Auschwitz), both via Skype and at her mother’s genteel home in Brussels.

It's not hard to imagine having a hostile reaction to this piece of work, so convincing is it in giving the impression of being tossed off that anyone not paying attention might overlook its calm control and the deep core of pain hidden in plain sight.

No Home Movie represents some of the finest footage in movie history. Might be worth buying a rental if you want to see how great this film is... but I highly suggest you don't buy the DVD/Blu-ray unless you're insanely crazy to do so.
