Giovanni currently lives a dreary life of near non-stop work. At school, his peers ridicule him incessantly, and his employer at work is distant and cold. As his isolation from society becomes unbearable, he suddenly finds himself on a train heading far away from his miserable home. Accompanied by Campanella, an acquaintance from school, Giovanni embarks on a journey that will define the rest of his life.

The story comes off as a bit confusing at first, but the animation is amazing. Giovanni and his friend go on a trip on a train to the stars and there is more to this trip than his friend is willing to say. You see life after death! Kenji Miyazawa the writer who wrote the novel wrote this in response to his sister's passing and it went on to a classic of Japanese science fiction.

This film is pretty, but it is SLOW. Very, very slow. Could pass as mellow but really I ended up putting it in fast forward. Altogether too much of it is one character looking at another, looking forward, out the window, then back again. SLLLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW.

An absolutely beautiful film. Having read the book myself, I really expected the film to dissapoint, but it's very good! Several scenes in the movies brought me to tears. I also love the brotherly relationship between Giovanni and Campanella, between someone who's poor and one who is wealthy. Lovely movie, and I definitely reccomend it!

This animated Japanese film could be disturbing for some people. It is far away from a typical Disney's film. A fantasy story where we are touched by issues like life, death, afterlife, goodness and evil, myths, God. Interesting as the Universe, the Milky Way, and the stars are referred along the story.

Beloved Japanese poet Kenji Miyazawa's most famous work, Night on the Galactic Railroad, seems to have slipped through most cracks, and is now criminally unheard of outside of Japan (as is Kenji Miyazawa himself). But, for me, this animated adaptation sits easily among the greatest children's movies ever made. While any synopsis is doomed to miss the point: young Giovanni is unexpectedly whisked away on a ghostly, space-faring locomotive, and undergoes something of a journey. Due to the movie's deliberate, contemplative pace, most kids would find it unspeakably boring, as I fear would most adults... Nonetheless, this is a powerful, transfixing, dreamy masterpiece, rich with psychedelic details and memorable scenes. Ghibli's Only Yesterday now has a serious competitor for the title of My Favorite Animated Movie Ever.
