Nanny McPhee appears at the door of a harried young mother who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she's arrived, Nanny discovers that the children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in. It can take a miracle to create a movie that's fun for kids and their parents. Luckily, Nanny McPhee has a little magic up her sleeve.

Pigs fly and perform a Busby Berkeley-style water ballet. Maggie Gyllenhaal sports a posh British accent. Everybody steps in dung repeatedly. These are the high points of Nanny McPhee Returns.

The initial close-up of Thompson - all sourly snaggletoothed and begoggled - is as funny as anything in the original. And just that one quick glimpse would have been perfect.

Several decent moments, but in many aspects this is a average film at best, with a uninspired and badly plotted story, and often feels like a Frankenstein's monster of bits and bobs that don't fit well together. Sub par performances, a dull plot and a poorly thought out film in general. Deeply average.
