Disturbing documentary that effectively dispels two popular myths. The belief that the Japanese were any less barbaric and evil than the Germans during the holocaust and the belief that the Genocide in Asia was less widespread is debunked. In China alone, 20 million people were killed by the Japanese, many through torture. In fact, the Japanese used rape as a torture device much more frequently than the Germans.

Compelling re-enactments and interviews with the witnesses of a forgotten atrocities in WWII. 20th Century is a tragic and sad century with 2 major wars and countless losses of lives. We need to learn from the past and cross our fingers that an event such as the Rape of Nanking will not repeat itself in our time.

I did not know much about the events taking place between China and Japan during the end of the 1930s, so as a history lesson it worked just fine for me. The story is told from the perspective of a bunch of Westerners living at Nanking (the former capital of China) at the time of the Japanese invasion. These Westerners are portrayed by actors (Harrelson, Hemingway). Interviews with real people (mostly Chinese victims and a few Japanese soldiers) and actual footage are also presented. Most stories about wars and the like have always two sides. This documentary takes clearly one side (the Chinese). If everything that is told in Nanking is true, then the adjective that best describes what the Chinese people experienced is: atrocious.
