Nobuko works in Nagasaki, Japan as a midwife. Her son died 3 years earlier from the atomic bomb. On August 9, 1948, her son appears in front of her again. Since that time, Koji appears in front of her and they reminiscence about pleasant times. These happy, but bizarre moments seem eternal.

You don't need a keen interest in history to be swept up in the deeply poignant delivery of Yoji Yamada's unmistakable anti-war message.

Director Yoji Yamada spends a long time on memory lane, spelling out the mourning process for a solid two hours.

Nagasaki could have been sentimental melodrama, but instead, it is a beautiful portrait of a grieving mother. The actress is wonderful, giving a measured and subtle performance that plays off the more exuberant one from the actor who plays her son. Nagasaki manages to expertly have it both ways. It condemns the tragedy, and sympathizes with the mother who lost everything, but it also gets to make light and celebrate the lives of those lost. It is a truly remarkable and beautiful film.
