Without the highlights of the reactions to the reconstructions, the rest of the film is fairly 'so-so', tabloid-style baiting - as the genre goes, even if it does raise a few laughs.

Wow. What a documentary. It always seems when Louis dives headfirst into a generally-defined pernicious sub-culture, he encounters resistance. Most of this resistance is often amicable and, at the very least, many members who currently live within the given lifestyle make themselves available for comment, if not only for the sake of the "education" or "enlightenment" of Louis Theroux. This is one of the few times he has explored a culture where no one was willing to talk, and he encountered fierce, often border-line illegal, resistance. This may tell you just as much as the dialogue itself. 5/5, 10/10, A+, whatever your rating scheme, see this film.

Louis Theroux bravely tries to take on scientology but does so tangentially as none of the Scientologists want to take part in a documentary. This means we are only left with possibly disgruntled ex members' accounts. We do get to witness some of their scare-tactics though. Luckily Theroux is more confrontational than I've ever seen him before and is unflappable - often beating them at their own game. The most intersting person in the film is the ex "enforcer" of Scientology who now suffers the same type of harassment who used to deal out. It's a shame none of the practicing Scientologists took part as they may have come off better that way. Weirdly funny in the way fans of Theroux's TV shows will be familiar with.

Theroux's first big-screen doc is an entertaining affair, peppered with surreal moments and wry wit, but its elusive subject remains out of reach.
