Very riveting biopic on the obscenity trial of Allen Ginsburg, who wrote the groundbreaking Beat poem "Howl" in the 1950s. James Franco does an amazing job of channeling Ginsburg.

The highlight of this film is the way in which it helps you appreciate the poem itself. As a rather dense and enigmatic poem, I was never clear on what exactly Ginsburg was alluding to and what he was hoping that more distant (or future) readers could mine from his words. In this film, the backstory of Ginsburg's personal life and his confessional interviews coupled with the animation actually present a strong visual overtone and reveal perhaps the intended "big-picture" message. It's just a great compilation of Ginsburg source material and criticism, as portrayed by some esteemed actors.

A stylish film about the life of a 20th century American poet, Allen Ginsberg. It depicts his struggle with homosexuality and the 1957 obscenity trial associated with Howl, his infamous poem. Innovative and experimental with biopic-animation-documentary elements. Flawed and not an easy watch, but it allows audience to understand Ginsberg and Howl's literary merit. James Franco's amazing as always.

I think this movie is often misunderstood by many people. I believe the movie focuses on three separate subjects: Ginsberg's life, the obscenity trial, and the poem itself. James Franco gives a great performance as Ginsberg, I heard he even started smoking. The other actors gave support, but they played their parts well. As it is this is an excellent movie that probably should go in order for people to understand it.

Story of a poem that became the rebel yell of the generation, James Franco is perfect Ginsberg and his reading gives chills, animations fit nicely with the powerful words, obscenity trial with absurd testimonies etc. Great little movie with a soul and a must for all booknerds everywhere!
