I really enjoyed this art film. And that is exactly what it is - an ART FILM. James Franco captured Allen Ginsberg very well and he was excellent in the film. I really enjoyed how they used the court trial as the center piece of the movie with the reading of "Howl" throughout the movie. Jon Hamm being cast as the publishers lawyer was genius especially given the time period of the movie. I was hoping that there was more movie by the time it was over and in a good way. I wanted to know more.

Howl is a very effective film and James Franco is excellent. It is not always an easy movie to watch, however, it addresses it's source in a straightforward manner and displays great integrity for the literary masterpiece from which it takes it name. The film is thoroughly engaging throughout.

What a surprise - a thoughtful, creative and very enjoyable film that even a guy with a limited interest in poetry enjoyed. Yet another example of first-rate talent working outside "the system" and with limited funding yet delivering high quality film-making (Kids are Alright, I Love you Phillip Morris, Crazy Heart). One would never think of James Franco as Allen Ginsberg, talk about taking poetic license, but to me this all worked. The animation of poetry was a terrific plus.
