This is a modest, clear sighted film, and it profits considerably from a lack of the bravura landscape photography that most directors would have used to puff up a movie set in Australia.

This Australian film is a charming look [from the book by Miles Franklin] at 19th-century rural days in general and the stirrings of self-realization and feminine liberation in the persona of a headstrong young girl who wants to go her own way.

The action and sentiments are familiar to the point of cliche, and there isn't much life in Gillian Armstrong's academic direction—she keeps pushing ideas over events, and meanings over emotions. But Judy Davis, as a teenage girl who dreams of transcending her rural background to become a cultivated, independent woman, grants the film much charm and passion.

I give it 3 for some generally familiar-feeling themes of fierce, independent women in period pieces where such behavior was cause for a witch trial. Fortunately for Judy Davis, this is Australia and not America so the worst she has to worry about is a dingo eating the baby she'll never have.

This Masterpiece not getting a Best picture Oscar Nomination is proof that The AMPAS are idiots. This film is one of the most unique and touching films I have ever seen. Judy Davis plays a poor country named Sybylla, who may not beautiful but is witty and passionate about having a career. She is a modren character for the 1900's australian society she lives in but her choice in the end is still shocking today in 21st century. Great costume design and Art direction make it also visually pleasing.
