Murmur of the Heart (1971)

This loosely plotted coming-of-age tale follows the life of 15-year-old Laurent Chevalier as he stumbles his way over the burgeoning swell of adolescence in 1950s France. After having his first sexual experience with a prostitute and dodging the lips of a priest, Chevalier contracts a case of scarlet fever. When the fever leaves him with a heart murmur, Chevalier is placed in a sanatorium, along with his over-attentive and adulterous mother.

Excellent film by the reliable Louis Malle. This coming-of-age film deals with sexuality in a tender and touching way no matter how taboo it gets; a nice contrast to the plethora of American films that are filled with juvenile antics and little more. Set to a fine jazz score, Murmur of the Heart is a real winner.

if you think these people are annoying your right!!! they do a good job acting and sometimes its funny ewhich makes it a littel better.

I guess I expected more from Malle after watching Au Revoir, but even if I hadn't seen his other film, I still would have considered this film a minor success. I just felt that this movie was a little unfocused and unsure of what points it wanted to make. Of course, Malle is a gifted filmmaker and his style is beautiful, but I just wished he would have made some adjustments to this script because with him as the director, this could have been an excellent film.

Like his masterpiece Au Revoir Les Enfants 16 years later, Louis Malle crafts his childhood memories into an adorable memoir as a gift to audience. Commonly viewed as precocity in terms of the sexuality and taboo subjects it addresses, I personally think it is more like a revelation of adolescent innocence and tenderness. As time goes by, the avant-garde sexuality is nothing in modern world, but the image of the daring Laurent, who goes where his minds flows without getting involved in secularism too much, is hardly seen now. As for the controversial subject, its beauty lies on its spontaneity, unlike the Bernardo Bertolucci type of pretentiousness and superfluity which arouse criticisms easily. It is more than a great coming-of-age film, but a truthful and timeless art production of the precious childhood memories.
