Monsters (2010)

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an infected zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures," while a journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

A supervisor recommended this to me and I've been listening to the soundtrack every day, its by Jon Hopkins. Its on netflix. Its a very good movie to watch because of our incoming president. Its prophetic.

I really enjoyed this movie. If you were a fan of Cloverfield then chances are you will enjoy this. Parts of Mexico have been inhabited by aliens and is an infected zone. Two travellers have to traverse their way through. The plot is not really important. What I really liked were the visuals and the superb soundtrack. The film keeps you in suspense until the very end and is not your usual 'aliens attack the Earth' type of movie. The pace may be a little slow for some but it is the alure of what may happen to the two main characters and the chemistry between them that keeps you hooked. Highly recommended.

As I loaded this movie up on Netflix, I was expecting to be in for a typical monster movie. Boy, was I wrong. At first it just seemed like another movie. "Okay, this guy is on his own personal mission to make some cash and he doesn't want to help the damsel in distress," I thought to myself. As I got further into the film, I found myself supremely surprised by the quality of acting. I actually felt for these characters and I wanted so badly for them to make it through to the end of the movie. This film really made me think. The ending was absolutely superb, despite what most others might say. It keeps your mind working even after the credits have finished rolling. Five stars.

Monsters was absolutely astounding. Everything about this film was nigh on perfect, from the very well crafted, yet simplistic titular 'Monsters', to the cinematography, the score and the acting. The one thing I can complain about is that the promoters chose to size it up next to Michael Bay's 'Crapline' in the UK and unfortunately, this film just won't get the viewers it really should be doing. If you're a fan of classic Sci-fi/drama in the vein of early 'JAWS' (1/2), then this is certainly the movie for you and a great way to round out a year of otherwise terrible cinema.
