Monsters (2010)

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an infected zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures," while a journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the U.S. border.

Wonderfully directed by Gareth Edwards, Monsters is a brilliant sci-fi with a huge heart. The two leads do a terrific job of carrying the film right to the heart-breaking and touching finale. I cannot recommend this film enough. Godzilla is in Edwards' safe and talented hands.

I admit this film isn't for everyone, but I am genuinely surprised how many people don't like it. Honestly, I think the biggest hurdle is simply expectations: this is NOT a monster movie, it is almost strictly a character drama that feature brief moments of action. It's almost like a mix of Jaws and Jurassic Park with an indie sensibility. Truth be told, I got far more of an emotional reaction out of this film than most blockbusters in the past decade.
