115th Movie of 2010 (rewatch) Seriously one of my top five favorite films. I like to watch this movie every five or so years, so it always stays fresh. For me, Monster in a Box is the equivalent of comfort food in movie form.

Spalding Gray talks directly to the camera (with some lighting and music effects) about his difficulty with writing his first novel and the parallels to his own life. For an hour and a half. More engrossing than one would think - the time flew by for me.

Too much Spalding Gray. Considering this is a movie about Spalding Gray, perhaps this should not come as any great shock.

See my review for Swimming to Cambodia. I liked all his monologues!

As a writer, I know that it's one thing to be able to write an interesting and entertaining story, and another entirely to be able to recite it in a way that is just as interesting and entertaining. Luckily, both areas seem to be Spalding Gray's expertise, so even though this film is just him monologuing the whole time, it still held my attention, and I even laughed a couple times. However, since this is a movie and not just a reading, there are definitively more ways he could have taken advantage of this new medium, rather than just subtle differences in lighting, music, or camera angle. Maybe this is just personal preference, but if I'm watching a movie, I want to feel like I'm watching a movie and not just a one-man stage performance that happened to be filmed.
