Monkey Shines is a creepy, bizarre, and original minor gem in the Romero canon. A film that I initially was hesitant to watch because of my love of animals, Monkey Shines surprised me by making the monkey into a legimate character, who we felt with along with the other human characters. As the monkey descends into homicidal behavior, we are simultaneously filled with horror and sadness because the monkey is not ultimately responsible for his actions--he is a product of science. In the final analysis, Monkey Shines is delighful little forgotten horror film that acts as a critique of the human race's desire to play god and to upset the natural order. As we watch a loving creature become a murderer, we are left to ask whether we as a species have any right to experiment upon other species.
