This is a work of art! There is an exquisite marriage of cinematography and soundtrack that creates a unique atmosphere, one that reminded me of the strange, surreal and esoteric section of 2001: A space Odyssey where Dave Bowman is slowly aging after contact with the stargate near Jupiter. Bears up to repeated viewings.

Beautifully shot and totally surreal. Everything about this film sucks you into the crew's dream/nightmare. I hate to say it, but when compared to it's closest cousin 2001: A Space Odyssey, I prefer Solaris.

a lovely, quiet film that contemplates love, loss, memory, identity, and humanity's relationship to its creator, all in the guise of a science-fiction ghost story. perhaps that description makes it sound overstuffed and pretentious. it isn't. steven soderbergh handles all of these ideas with remarkable dexterity, and he infuses them with such aching poetry that the film absorbs you as gradually and completely as the film's titular entity. [note: i haven't yet seen the original film by tarkovsky. after this, though, it went straight to the top of my netflix queue. many people say it's even better than soderbergh's remake.]
