Here's the thing about Mommy: Even when Dolan gets self-indulgent and works his themes into the ground, he's a one-man fireworks display. His images jump off the screen and stick in your head.

Canada's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, "Mommy" is Xavier Dolan's best work to date. It's a powerfully moving film with smothering performances and Dolan's trademark style. It will punch you in the gut, seemingly for the fun of it, then show you the valid intention of that punch that will leave you in somber gratitude. Good luck at this year's Oscars, "Mommy." I have very high hopes for you.

An already accomplished filmmaker at only 25, Dolan shows in this movie the extent of his talent when it comes to representing empathy and feelings. Also, he loves people who struggle and are at-a-loss to understand what's happening to them but who still fight to make something out of their lives. He has all of this with the scenario and afterwards, it's just showing off his talent in a great fashion. The way he uses this particular square screen (and more precisely the changes from square to regular) give way to two of the most extraordinary scenes ever made.
