Dolan trae el cometido del cine a la cara del espectador de una manera sutilmente, en una película que logra establecerse en la intimidad pero también en lo incómodo de lidiar con las situaciones que la vida ofrece y que comunmente son ignoradas tal y como el caso del triángulo afectivo entre Diane, Steve y Kyla. Aparte de contar con un guión familiar que ya lo caracteriza (los numerables defectos en el ser humano, pero especialmente en la relación madre e hijo), Xavier Dolan despliega un juego visual que nos hace sentir en carne propia la búsqueda de la libertad, el enfrentamiento ante nosotros mismos y la más importante: la unión inquebrantable que se forja cuando una persona logra entregarse y mejorar hacia con el/la que tiene al lado. Un nudo en la garganta es el efecto final que "Mommy" logra establecer en el espectador, invitandolo a cuestionarse acerca de la verdadera importancia de quienes nos rodean.
