A mature and visually elegant period romance that remains one of the earliest and most compassionate overtly gay-themed films in movie history. Based upon Herman Bang's 1902 novel, Dreyer's Michael refashions the classical Greek myth of Jupiter and Ganymede into a love triangle between an aging artist, Zoret, his protagonist Michael, and Princess Zamikoff, an aristocratic femme fatale as entranced by Michael's youthful beauty as Zoret is.

Freund is the cinematographer, and Dreyer is of course the director, so it looks pretty. But it's a decidedly minor work.

As drama, the characters remain too distant to offer the warmth needed for Dreyer to convey that love in its purity conquers all in the end.

A example of the power of silent cinema, and not only that, but early queer media. Dreyer's early talents are demonstrated hereâ??I think I'll have to follow more of his films. Neal Kurz's musical pairing gives the film even more depth; beautiful work on the piano.

a worthy early effort from a true master of melodrama. what really makes this stand out is the discussion of homosexuality, very rare for the 1920s. very well shot though not excessively interesting, it does 3 stars for being ahead of its time
