Based upon Herman Bang's 1902 novel, Dreyer's Michael refashions the classical Greek myth of Jupiter and Ganymede into a love triangle between an aging artist, Zoret, his protagonist Michael, and Princess Zamikoff, an aristocratic femme fatale as entranced by Michael's youthful beauty as Zoret is.

Freund is the cinematographer, and Dreyer is of course the director, so it looks pretty. But it's a decidedly minor work.

A sad little melodrama. Not the best of Dreyer, but not bad either. It's a sad tale of unrequited love, and it's heartbreaking to see the Master painter constantly taken advantage of. Not a good place to start if you are new to silent films, but if you enjoy the medium, you'll enjoy this movie.

Intense chamber piece about a decadent old artist who has his heart broken by his rather feckless model & adopted son. Everyone in the film is hampered by frustrated or unfulfilled love, and the crucifixes which often appear in frame suggest that this is the cross each has to bear. All of it takes place in sumptuous interior settings full of paintings, sculptures and lavish furnishings, which may comment at times on the action and the characters but it's an opulence which offers no one any comfort when love drags them into the most intense suffering.
