Paris in the 1920s. Marguerite Dumont is a wealthy woman with a passion for music and the opera. For years, she has performed regularly for a circle of guests. But Marguerite sings tragically out of tune and no one has ever told her. Her husband and her close friends have always encouraged her in her illusions. Ars Gratis Artis, Marguerite is a sublime delight from France about an opera obsessed matron who dotes on the musical society near her chateau. Despite her devotion and endless practice her singing is atrocious. When she sings it sounds like someone stepped on a cat. But Marguerite is so endearing and genuine that it's such fun. There are laugh out loud moments, scenes with vocals that make you cringe and terrific side players. Most enjoyable is Michel Fau as a washed up opera tenor with secret sexual predilctions that are used to draft him to coach Marguerite for her debut before fine society in a recital she has funded and planned at a major venue. This film has a beating heart and the performance by Catherine Ferot as Madame Dumont is a treasure. This should get a nomination in the best foreign film category for 2016.

A funny but thankfully merciful film about a wealthy society lady (Catherine Frot) who - convinced of her talent as a singer - subjects her acquaintances to ear-splitting recitals of her music.

It's handsomely turned out in its monochrome palette, and Marguerite's big numbers remain reliably amusing, Frot mangling her standards like a sham-dram Liza or Barbra while Marcon tersely clutches his hunting rifle in the wings.
