Iranian filmmakers have a history of couching their criticisms of life in Iran in metaphor. This film puts its portrait of authoritarian oppression out in the open.

Alan Scherstuhl 09 Jun 2014

The film, while wrenching and audacious, is crafted with that humane and observational mastery of great Iranian cinema of recent decades.

Jonathan Romney 24 Jun 2014

The message is so important - and Rasoulof is conveying it under such difficult conditions - that the film rather transcends normal considerations.

Fabulous film. Shows all levels of the spectrum - the total brutality of dictatorship, the total brutality of its servants, the absolute sacrifice of the writers. - ie the good and the evil in humans. In physical terms, brutality wins, but manuscripts don't burn ( reference to Bulgakov's book 'The Master and Margarrita' - which has become an international catchcry for intellectual freedom), so in fact, the writers' words overcome the evil around them. Cinematically excellent- acting, photography are all exceptional. Not a fun night out, but certainly worth seeing and memorable. One wonders how it could be made - and the triumph of good over evil is that the film has been made.

Not only an angry film, but a brave one - apparently based on the murder of writers opposed to the Iranian regime. Chilling stuff!
