Mamma Roma (1962)

After years spent working as a prostitute in her Italian village, middle-aged Mamma Roma has saved enough money to buy herself a fruit stand so that she can have a respectable middle-class life and reestablish contact with the 16-year-old son she abandoned when he was an infant. But her former pimp threatens to expose her sordid past, and her troubled son seems destined to fall into a life of crime and violence.

This is only the third film of Pier Paolo Pasolini I've seen but it was excellent. Anna Magnani gives a great performance as the title character who wants to leave her life as a prostitute so she can take care of her teenage son. Great acting, I really loved the performance by the son, Ettore Garofolo. Sure, Magnani was a bit over the top at times (but having seen her in The Rose Tattoo, this isn't even close to that role), but she still give a great perfomance. The ending was very good.

Anyone who thinks Pasolini lacks a sense of composition should watch this. Magnani is sublime.

Pasolini's warmest and most emotional work. Magnani's performance is the weakest part of the film, but in every other terms, Mamma Roma is Pasolini's best motion picture.
