Mamma Roma (1962)

After years spent working as a prostitute in her Italian village, middle-aged Mamma Roma has saved enough money to buy herself a fruit stand so that she can have a respectable middle-class life and reestablish contact with the 16-year-old son she abandoned when he was an infant. But her former pimp threatens to expose her sordid past, and her troubled son seems destined to fall into a life of crime and violence.

TIFF luckilly put together a retrospective of Pasolini recently. No more oversaturation with Fellini. This and so many other of the 50s and 60s Italian dramas are heartbreaking and so wonderfully put together.

Because it is sublime, and because the confrontation of many of Pasolini's films can be an intimidation, it is among the controversial director's best films.

I watched quite a few Pasolini works (Accatone as well). This one has a sensitivity that replaces the brutal sharpness of Accatone. Still, it's a harsh world in Pasolini's Rome.

One of Pasolini's best moments, although his second film. The effort of a woman to rise up her child, but the world out there is too tough. Anna Magnani is just perfect. Especially the last plan.
