The last thing a filmmaker wants to hear about their horror movie is that it was boring. Unfortunately, that word best describes Malevolent. Void of scares, its few engaging moments early on – and Celia Imrie’s acting – just aren’t enough to help Malevolent rise above its stilted performances and nonthreatening ghosts.

Malevolent is far from perfect — it kind of sabotages a solid first hour with a clunky, tone-changing climax more likely to leave you queasy than scared — but it’s still better than A) a lot of theatrically-released horror films and B) a lot of Netflix original films.

This is a film which perhaps sometimes gets some unfair ratings by reviews. Elements of it are certainly solid and we'll done. The acting is strong throughout and I liked the characters. The atmosphere is creepy and the film beautifully shot at times. For the most part, the storyline works too, though weakens as the film goes on before falling down somewhat at the end: Dragging the film down to being a bit of a regular unimaginative supernatural gore fest in the last half hour. Overall, creepy at times and worth a watch, but nothing outstanding.
