This Maleficent is disappointing, although Jolie certainly sells it hard, as does Fanning, who takes it as seriously as anything else in her career.

An uninspired and unnecessary sequel that won’t leave you spellbound. There’s neither enough Maleficent or genuine magic to make it worth a revisit.

I wasn’t expecting much going into this, but I’m very impressed! For a Disney “remake” and what is kinda Avatar as a fairy tale, it was surprisingly original. It’s not often we get a really good high production classic fairy tale like this, and I am here for it. It was emotionally moving and surprisingly dark, but hopeful and happy in the end, of course. If you go into this tuned-in to the type of movie it is, it’s gold.
