Magic to Win (2011)

Nobody knows that Professor Hong Sum Kwai is actually the Water Magician, one of the five elemental wizards. One day, Hong accidentally loses his magical powers, which are transferred to his student Cheng Meisi. The girl happily uses the superhuman abilities she acquired by luck in life, at school, and on the volleyball court, but those powers also land her in trouble as a war of wizardry rages around her... Fire Magician Bi Yewu is desperate to turn back time to change a tragedy in the past, but to do so he needs to bring together the powers of all five elemental wizards. Wood Magician Gu Xinyue foresees catastrophe if time is warped, so he alerts the other wizards - including Earth Magician Ling Feng and Metal Magician Charlie - to join forces and prevent it from happening...

Magic to Win has a promising start and a couple of nice ideas, but it quickly wears out its welcome thanks to dodgy special effects and a plot that basically amounts to a bunch of wizards throwing inconsequential CGI light bolts at each other.

yip (ip man, spl) returns to direct a light-hearted fare. disregarding cheesy ads, the "cutesiness" and comedy charmed me. as magical as sorcerer's apprentice, the all star cast seemed to had fun. oh yeah, and lightsabres. (=

Mostly this is just aggravating, as the volleyball girls flap and pout, the wizards glower and prance and the film trundles from one half-hearted and predictable action sequence to another.

I won't be surprised if I forget what this movie is about a month from now. Not bad, not good, but definitely forgettable! :|

seemed pretty cheesy / corny. quite a lot focused on volleyball for some reason. the ending was pretty anti-climactic
