two of my favorite performances this year. they need almost no dialogue, their shared (and hidden) glances and gazes are story enough. i'm cribbing the rest from other reviews as they're my sentiments also, just better worded: "Mademoiselle Chambon is about love in midlife, about two souls meeting, and how that can be the most beautiful thing in the world but also the most inconvenient." "The main characters' desires are so deeply submerged, hidden not only from each other than from themselves, that it's a shock when even the tiniest, most tentative endearment is expressed." "Furtive glances and shared passions speak more than its shy, inarticulate characters can say." "Much of the time the audience is left staring as intently as the characters, trying to figure out what these people are thinking..."

A construction worker husband meets his son's subsitute teacher. He fixes her loose window and uses it a window of opportunity to get into the teacher's pants. This is just another story abuot middle-aged love, in which one partner feels restless and needs to couple with someone from the opposite sex. He will think about leaving but will change his mind at the last moment. We've seen it all before.

Why is almost every French film about adultery? Right from the first time we see married Jean (Vincent Lindon - the French Bryan Brown) clap eyes on the titular character, you just know they are going to end up writhing around in bed together. It takes the entire length of the film for them to arrive at the inevitable, and its a tedious wait. You know how in some films nothing much happens but it doesn't matter because the journey is so good? This isn't one of those films. Bugger all happens. It's boring. And wouldn't you know, M Chambon plays the violin, so we get long stretches of maudlin violin music while our leads mistily stare off into space. Film continues the rather odd cinematic tradition of featuring a real-life couple (at least, they used to be) who offer no on-screen sparks.

The final image of the film, the sight of someone's heart breaking, quietly, with nobody else noticing (R. Thomas) is hard to shake-off. You see all his hopes turn into resignation in a split second while he drinks his coffee. Its the most depressing image of a man drinking coffee ever put on screen.
