A construction worker husband meets his son's subsitute teacher. He fixes her loose window and uses it a window of opportunity to get into the teacher's pants. This is just another story abuot middle-aged love, in which one partner feels restless and needs to couple with someone from the opposite sex. He will think about leaving but will change his mind at the last moment. We've seen it all before.

Pleeze, this is an art house put-on. The long, agonizing pauses which are meant to pass as true-to-life awkward moments are sooo studied and sooo forced that I felt like I was watching a satire of French Cinema 101. I didn't find this film at all realistic. I just can't think of any situations where people who are attracted to one another stand unnaturally close to them and say nothing and then part. Eventually these two lovers, who represented unrequited love to the extreme, do go to bed in a dark room where we see so little of them that once again we are left (pardon the pun) in the dark. French cinema is often masterful with nuance but this film wasn't among those. Ultimately it was boring. The only animated scene was the 80th birthday party for the patriarch, but even this scene lacked spontaneity. I hate to say it but I ended up regarding the director, another woman no less, as something of a fraud.

This was a lovely film that dealt with choices and how sometimes the very act of choosing causes pain no matter which choice one makes. The two lead actors, Vincent Lindon (Jean) and Sandrine Kiberlain (Veronique) gave us characters who conveyed their feelings with few words. There were silences that in another context might have been uncomfortable, but here felt completely natural because of the emotional presence of these two fine actors. The pace is slow, and does seem to drag at times, but the lovely scenery and the moral dilemma faced by these star-crossed lovers helps to assuage the languor one feels at times. Aure Atika plays Jean's wife (Anne-Marie), and her eyes tell us that she knows something is not quite right, but in true European fashion, rather than confront, she waits patiently for Jean to sort out his feelings. This is not a simple story. This seems like real people dealing with real moral choices and one feels that strong bonds are being tested. Those bonds that survive may thereby be stronger for the testing.
