June 1946: Stalin invites Russian emigres to return to the motherland. It's a trap: when a ship-load from France arrives in Odessa, only a physician and his family are spared execution or prison. He and his French wife (her passport ripped up) are sent to Kiev. She wants to return to France immediately; he knows that they are captives and must watch every step.

the film is very nice, would recomend it to all those who like political echo in the film, but the ending , when you once again realize that it is based on true story just breaks your heart... cruel life

I suppose it was very good; a great story, and delicately filmed. I had trouble reconciling the two halves of the film with each other though; not from a turn of events sort of perspective, but simply as a viewer. The beginning was a slow build, and I couldn't feel the tension. I couldn't feel the urgency that I'm sure must have been there in the real story. It just seemed unrepresented on film. Once I got to the second half, I finally got swept up in the urgency - only to have the scenes then cut to these short clips of what was happening over the years. (After having been slowly dragged through what seemed like an eternity.) Probably just a personal tack; maybe I was expecting something different. All in all, a touching story and worth a look.

Though the story plot is shaky with its sudden flash-forward every 10 to 30 minutes, I find the movie "Est - Ouest" and its theme of police state surveillance during the Soviet era to be relevant to today's world, especially after the recent discovery that everyone's internet activities are being monitored. "Est - Ouest" is a cautionary tale for our privacy-less age.
