Madadayo (1993)

In postwar Tokyo, beloved writer-professor Hyakken Uchida retires and is buoyed through hardship by the fierce devotion of his former students, who honor him each year with a raucous "Not yet!" birthday toast. Told in warm, gently comic vignettes, Kurosawa's farewell celebrates aging, friendship, and the sustaining ritual of teacher and pupils refusing to say goodbye.

Not Kurosawa's best, but somehow a fitting final film. Funny and sad.

Perhaps the quintessential "late film," Kurosawa uses the stories of a retired professor and his endearing relationships to his loyal students, his wife, and two cats as a sounding board to reflect upon mortality and its relationship to history. For a director who seemed to pack quick and hurried exposition into the first acts of his earlier films (this tendency nearly mars even his best film, 'High and Low') the patience and leisurely pace of this film are a revelation.

A fantastic film that follows the final years of a retired teacher in Japan, that covers alot of emotional ground for it's 2 hours. Witty and moving, this comes highly recomended.

Akira Kurosawa's last and probably most simple story. A good finish to a amazing career. It is about a retired teacher who at each birthday party, with friends and old students, yells "Madadayo" which means "not yet" which has to do with I am not dead yet and then downs two liters of beer.
