Madadayo (1993)

In postwar Tokyo, beloved writer-professor Hyakken Uchida retires and is buoyed through hardship by the fierce devotion of his former students, who honor him each year with a raucous "Not yet!" birthday toast. Told in warm, gently comic vignettes, Kurosawa's farewell celebrates aging, friendship, and the sustaining ritual of teacher and pupils refusing to say goodbye.

La ultima pelicula de Akira Kurosawa... termino siendo el epilogo de sus ideas, el final perfecto de su carrera, una despedida para nunca nunca olvidarlo.

It's not really a movie about the character of the much-loved Professor; rather, it's about Kurosawa himself. An excellent self-portrait.

Sometimes amusing, often touching story of a retired Japanese professor during WWII, who inspires devotion from his former students. A great metaphor for Kurosawa himself, fittingly his last film as director. Beautifully shot, and the characters feel very real.

A masterly work, with Kurosawa, then 83, still capable of surprising an audience and creating indelible images.

Unfortunately, Kurosawa's last film has none of the beauty of Dreams and none of the scale of Ran. It's thrown-together and somewhat lacking in scope, and makes me wonder how much time Kurosawa really spent on it.
