Luca is a film soaked in nostalgic affection for the Italian coast, awe for the empowerment of knowledge, and love of the power of family, whether born of blood or choice.

this is literally the best disney pixar movie in a very long time. the storyline is amazing and i love luca and alberto so much. the last scene of the movie is literally the best part of the whole thing. makes me cry every single time.

It borrows a lot of animation DNA from Studio Ghibli. It borrows the facial animation style of the Ardman Studio (Wallace & Grommet); yet, it's all used to build engaging, nuanced characters. This leads to a much more heartfelt third act pay-off than I expected. Also wonderful are the color renders of the fish people and the town. 10/10 on the animation. For those concerned, it's much less gay-friendly and more fairy-tale-ish for which I was grateful.

For the most part, though, Luca is light and effervescent as a summertime Bellini, which is something parents can drink while the kids watch this.
