Looker (1981)

Plastic surgeon Larry Roberts performs a series of minor alterations on a group of models who are seeking perfection. The operations are a resounding success. But when someone starts killing his beautiful patients, Dr. Roberts becomes suspicious and starts investigating. What he uncovers are the mysterious - and perhaps murderous - activities of a high-tech computer company called Digital Matrix.

*1/2 (out of four) A misguided tech-thriller that offers little suspense and an abundance of clumsy scenes and stale dialogue. Trying to keep perfection, a plastic surgeon alters models faces. Son someone begins murdering the models. Albert Finney stars along with James Coburn and Susan Dey (trying to break her "Partridge Family" image).

I really enjoyed the usual mixture of science-y nonsense that Michael Crichton is known for here, as well as really average everyman Albert Finney as our lead trying to save the young hottie Susan Dey from a larger conspiracy. Fun stuff, worth killing an afternoon with.

Lifeless, preposterous "thriller" with the made-for-TV mediocrity only seen in theatres from 1979 to 1982.

Hollywood should have learned its lesson - actors & writers are not directors. If Crichton stayed in the writer's chair, a real director could have made a nice little thriller here. "Looker" had an interesting premise and style but immediately plunged into a meaningless waste of 2 hours. Susan Dey, matured from Laurie Partridge into a beautiful actress, served no purpose but to look nice. James Coburn was completely unnecessary, except for box office sales. And the "cat & mouse" detective Dorian Harewood vs. person of interest Albert Finney loses credibility after they reveal the killer early on. This was 1980, the year we entered the age of computers, video games & TV editing consoles. Crichton used these themes only to steer this movie into an outdated digital-video mess.
