Characters who seem like caricatures somehow miraculously melt into real-life human beings with bittersweet yearnings, desires & struggles through the course of the film. Against your better judgment, you fall in love with them. Only Timothy Spall

Some people think this and other films by Leigh are degrading to the British working class. I say bollocks. I think he has a great affection for the working class, but is not afraid to lampoon or critique its foibles.

With "Naked" stands as the best from Mike Liegh. Almost completely opposite that film in texture, it is probably the most gentle film from the director. Outstanding performances from some of the (now) leading lights of acting from the British Isles. Another reviewer called this "sublime slice of ordinary life" and I can not disagree.
