Kolya lives in a small fishing town near the stunning Barents Sea in Northern Russia. He owns an auto-repair shop that stands right next to the house where he lives with his young wife Lilya and his son Roma from a previous marriage. The town's corrupt mayor Vadim Shelevyat is determined to take away his business, his house, as well as his land. First the Mayor tries buying off Kolya, but he unflinchingly fights as hard as he can so as not to lose everything he owns including the beauty that has surrounded him from the day he was born. Facing resistance, the mayor starts being more aggressive, causing tragedy for all. The barren landscape and gray dawns mirror the despair and isolation.

A grim and unrelenting tale of the small man being crushed between the norms of institutions, in this case state and church. I found it compelling, tragic and , at times, beautiful.

Leviathan is acted and directed with unflinching ambition, moving with deliberative slowness and periodically accelerating at moments of high drama and suspense. It isn't afraid of massive symbolic moments and operatic gestures.

Andrei Zyagintsev's intensely heartrending tale of human tragedy and political corruption is a masterpiece of slow, visceral storytelling, sumptuous cinematography with beautiful landscape shots of the remote Russian setting and a scathing critique on the state of the country.

What a compelling film...from the beautiful sad landscapes to the sad irony of the story. The speech at the end of the movie, especially sums up so much for me. It's a masterpiece transcending beyond Russia leaping right into people's lives. No description will do this movie justice, it's a must see.
