Legionnaire (1998)

Alain Lefevre is a boxer paid by a Marseille mobster to take a dive. When he wins the fight he attempts to flee to America with the mobster's girlfriend Katrina. This plan fails and he seeks escape by joining the foreign legion. As part of the legion he tangles with abusive lieutenant Steinkampf and bonds with legionnaires Luther, Mackintosh and Rosetti.

You know, I actually kind of liked this. Nothing really amazing happens, nothing too brilliant is said, and the action scenes are pretty poorly composed, but there are some great actors attached, it's got a pretty good war-buddies element to it, and damn it, Van Damme is so earnest that I can't help but kind of enjoy the movie.

einer der schÃ¶nsten Filme des mittleren van damme und ein echtes stÃ¼ck naive kunst, geschaffen von menschen, die offensichtlich viel zeit in ihrem leben damit verbracht haben, sonntagnachmittags alte abenteuerfilme zu schauen. mit diesem semiepischen period piece nahm van damme sein bis zum eintritt in die selbstreflexive spÃ¤tphase seines schaffens wohl ambitioniertestes projekt in angriff - und triumphierte dabei nicht auf ganzer linie. aber doch gelang ihm ein durch und durch altmodisches und herzerwÃ¤rmendes werk. chapeau.
