I have mixed feelings about this one. Overall this movie had the potential to be much better than it actually was. Rebecca Hall has an extremely limited amount of acting ability. I understand that her character was to play a ditzy character but she didn't even manage to pull that off. She was far too over-dramatic to be at all believable. I was also shocked at the performance of Bruce Willis. Usually a class A act in action films, his performance here was at times shocking. Not a terrible movie but there are much better things to watch out there.

Unfortunately, there are people who invested their money in this movie based on the cast. This movie came off as lazy and leaned on formerly established stereotypes. A beacon of mediocrity - leaning on many already covered topics/relationships/characters. A superstitious, bookie meets an awkward/shy/go-getting Floridian girl who happens to be good at numbers and he decides that she is his rabbit's foot. She learns the ropes of the bookie business, while he explains to her the pitfalls of Vegas and bookmaking, while dealing with his strong willed, skeptical, business-oriented Vegas wife. Character developed has been established from my comments above, as they fulfill all of the normal stereotypes. If Pretty Woman was shot in Vegas, was a thoughtless lazy script and didn't include Richard Gere or Julia Roberts, this would be the result.

Never more than the sum of its parts. Some half decent performances but altogether too nice. Presents gambling and Las Vegas as the home of a bunch of mostly loveable characters where nothing bad happens. Catherine Zeta Jones is particularly miscast. Why was her part not given to someone older and sharper like Cybill Shepherd? Give this one a miss...

This was a weird movie to say the least. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be funny, sexy or serious. It really is neither and for the most part it's pointless and irrelevant. It's a shame since the cast is decent and Rebecca Hall is usually a pretty solid actress. Granted she's British and perhaps playing a low level employee for a low level gambler might not be her forte. Lay the favorite is one of these movies that has no audience and will probably be a total commercial flop. It's too convoluted for teens, not interesting enough for smart adults and it doesn't even get deep enough into gambling to make it worth anyone's time. Surprisingly though the movie is somewhat entertaining. Perhaps because one is consistently trying to figure things out and find the angle or what it's about. Ultimately this one should be watched on cable and only if there is nothing else on. Not even Laura Prepon's boobs made this clunker work.
