Late Marriage (2001)

Zaza is a 31-year old Israeli bachelor, handsome and intelligent, and his family wants to see him married. But tradition dictates that Zaza has to choose a young virgin. She must be beautiful and from a good family, preferably rich. Zaza's parents, Yasha and Lily drag Zaza to meet potential brides and their families. Zaza has no choice. He plays along with his family, advocates of the suffocating traditions of their Georgian Jewish heritage. But Zaza always manages to somehow get out of being engaged. What his parents don't know is that Zaza is already in love. Judith is sensuous, strong and intriguing. She's also a divorcée with a 6-year-old daughter. So Zaza has kept Judith a secret from his family. He will have to choose between respect of the strict confines of family and tradition, or the love of his life.

Late Marriage is an in-your-face family drama and black comedy that is filled with raw emotions conveying despair and love.

Late Marriage (2001) Hatuna Meuheret. good movie but not a four star movie. SEE MY 5 Lists of foreign film nominated for best Foreign film Oscar. This movie is first movie by former Georgian (Russian) Jew now living in Israel. A 31 year olds (getting doctorate of humanities) parents and other family are arranging a marriage for him. He does not protest much but does not accept any of the offers as he has girlfriend (divorced and with a 7 year old daughter) he is already involved with. Its great seeing and hearing the cultures and tradition of others. However this movie does not go anywhere. In the end his parents intervene and he must choose between his family traditions or his love. Its still a good movie but not a 4 or 5 star movie. The film does contain one long sex scene which gave it an NC 17 rating. three stars.

This film is all about character, and these characters are really well fleshed out. Very simple visual style, but that's not really the point, right?

An Israeli film about a Georgian immigrant family who use mafia tactics to get their son to marry the woman of their choice. It's difficult to tell whether he's a son or a hostage throughout most of the film. Well written and acted, especially the roles played by the son and his girlfriend by choice.
