Last Orders (2001)

Jack Dodd was a London butcher who enjoyed a pint with his mates for over 50 years. When he died, he died as he lived, with a smile on his face watching a horse race on which he had bet, with borrowed money. But before he died he had a final request, 'Last Orders', that his ashes be scattered in the sea at Margate. The movie follows his mates, Ray, Lenny and Vic and his foster son Vince as they journey to the sea with the ashes.

A sad but heartwarming film about friends laboured with the task of scattering a dear friends ashes some distance away. On their trip each character loses themselves in their memories of their late friend giving us an insight to their lives and friendships as a group. I found this film very credible and thought provoking. It is very cleverly written, each scene is both evocative and sentimental and carries with it a gentle wit and a smile. The cast itself draws you to the film and as expected they deliver a sensational performance. A great British film.

Understated performances from stalwarts of British cinema. It doesn't seem enticing, but it slowly draws you in.

You want a finely acted, emotional tinged character driven gem then you've come to the right movie.

The temporal jumps between the present and varying points in the past deprive the film of a sense of completeness; the transitions from scene to scene are largely disorienting, leaving you struggling to find your bearings.

The lifelong friends in Fred Schepisi's marvelous Last Orders actually seem like lifelong friends.
