not at all what anyone thinks it is. this is the gorgeously shot story of two men growing growing up from boys in a strict acting troupe, and living there lives as bejing opera performers during the japanese occupation, the natioanalist seizure, the cummunist revolution, the great leap forward, and the cultural revolution. it is at times a period peice, at times operatic perfomances, and always goddamned brilliant. the use of sepia tone early in the movie was a good one, because that really pleased my eyes. god, this may be a new chinese favorite for me, and i've been watching alot of chinese movies.

Oh, AMAZING. Intricate characters, spectacular acting (especially on the kids' parts), and it has deep expressions on nurture, development, and people.

It gets too melodramatic towards the end, but it's still the BEST Chinese movie I've ever seen. I still have no idea how Chen Kaige could make this film, and produce shit like 'The Promise'10 years later.
