This film just took me straight back to 1983 I was back there backcombing my hair wearing too much eyeliner. I can remember first hand back when skinhead didn't mean rascist and this film reflects that time perfectly. I knew every character in this film in 80's England makes me want to turn back time and live it all again. This film is just pure in it's brilliance a complete antidote to glamorised Hollywood tripe.

This is one of those films that truly gets deep underneath your skin. I remember seeing this film years ago, and still, every time I watch it, it has the same overwhelming effect. This is to this day one of the many films that I will hold as a standard for myself as an aspiring filmmaker.

A superb film , sure to be a classic. The film is gritty and raw and shows you how a young mind can be manipulated and the some what shallowness and hypercritical nature of Racism. The film transports the viewer to 1983 with the use of a mix of Contemporary film will a cinematography that makes Shaun world very real and it makes you feel that you are watching a documentary. The film is distinctly British , no doubt foreign audiences will need subtitles to understand the lead villains strong Liverpool accent and the Yorkshire accents of most of the case. Shane Meadows really empresses as a director , you can see his flare he has given a story that very easily could have ended up as unrealistic or similar to many other films about racism, this is shown even in his casting of Thomas Turgoose as the lead even though he had never acted before and has been diagnosed with ADHD. Shane clearly knows the story he wants to tell and tells it masterfully.

This film is absolutely flawless. Apart from showing the truth about the skinhead culture, the acting is so realistic and it really feels like it was filmed in England in the 80's. The story depicts a young boy, Shaun Fields (played by Thomas Turgoose) who lives with his mother after losing his father in the Falklands during the early 1980's. At school he is bullied and ridiculed and then Shaun finds friendship and respect in a skinhead gang, led by the likeable Woody. Turgoose was outstanding as Shaun, an amazing talent. The movie is funny, gritty and compelling!

An intimate and involving film that studies character and social issues both extremely effectively. A gloomy, sad depiction of disaffected youth and the danger of a fatherless son. The young cast are all very impressive and naturalistic, turning in moving performances, with an especially emotionally rich performance from Stephen Graham. A very mature, realized story told on screen with an aggresive energy.
